Video Labs

Although TRC sells both hardware and software separately we specialize in equipping entire research and product testing labs. A lab is any combination of hardware and software that facilitates research or product testing, ranging from a single computer with the proper software to a three-line observation lab requiring multiple VCRs, monitors, cameras, and video switching devices.

Portable and Stationary (fixed) Lab Types

Labs, in relation to our products, are divided into two two major types: portable and stationary (fixed).

Portable Labs

A portable lab is meant to be mobile most of the time.  This lab might be used for product testing purposes, such as industrial engineering research or on-the-job observations.  For other potential uses of an observation lab, see Who Can Use OCS?.

Fixed Labs

A stationary lab has one main location, though parts of it may be moved. This type of lab might be used for such things as software usability testing.  For other potential uses of an observation lab, see Who Can Use OCS?.

Combining Portable and Fixed Labs

There are research or product testing situations that are best addressed by using both portable and fixed labs. For example, for psychological research a portable lab could be used for research on a playground while a fixed lab could be used for research in a reestablished location such as a maze setup for rats. For other potential uses of an observation lab, see Who Can Use OCS?.

Lab Diagrams

You may now want to examine a series of sample lab diagrams. A note of warning: lab diagrams can be complex and confusing.

  • If you have no experience with multimedia technology:  We suggest that you go through the Lab Tour first. The tour gives a brief run-down of various lab configurations and explains how the hardware works together.
  • If you are already familiar with observational and video editing labs:  We suggest that you go directly to the Lab PDF. When you download this page you can view PDF files that provide lab information with extensive details.
Please note
  • The lab configuration designs are free of charge.

  • The most recent referenced lab configurations represent earlier designs.

  • We provide information about our current configuration designs.

  • We provide a no-cost lab design consultation.
